Commute Options is scheduling Safe Streets classes to educate all roadway users on best practices for sharing the road. The education aims to decrease the number of crashes between roadway users in Central Oregon. Class times to be determined. Safe Streets Grant Information:
The Bend Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) was
awarded an ODOT Transportation Safety Division grant
that was discussed in the news release dated 7/18/12.
The funding will be used to implement safety outreach
about unsafe behaviors and enhanced police enforcement
to enforce safety laws with drivers, bicyclists and
pedestrians at identified high crash locations.
The Bend Police Department will be scheduling additional
officers with funding from this grant to enforce traffic laws
for pedestrians, motorists, and other roadway users
through September 2012. Commute Options will be
hosting outreach events to promote safety on our
roadways. Please check commuteoptions.org to see
when education events will be scheduled.
Example targeted behaviors may include;
motorist failure to yield to pedestrians;
motorist overtaking a stopped vehicle at
a marked or unmarked crosswalk;
awareness of surroundings for all road
users, such as distracted driving;
Bicyclists wrong way riding;
Bicycling at night without lights;
Driving or bicycling while under the
influence of drugs or alcohol;
Downtown sidewalk walk zone.
Bicycles shall not be ridden on a sidewalk in the Downtown District or in the
Centennial Parking Garage.
A volunteer effort is underway to install sidewalk Walk Zone decals downtown in the next week. Please check back for additional updates at www.bendmpo.org
