The Ponderosa Bike Bus began just last year with the simple goal, to turn the daily commute to school into something students and parents could genuinely look forward to. What started as an idea has grown into a routine. Every morning, five students ride their bikes together to Ponderosa Elementary, forming a little caravan led by dedicated parents. It’s become a fun filled daily routine for these students to enjoy their commute and bond on their way to school. Sarah, husband and neighbor Laura all rotate taking students to school and picking them up. They switch off for pick up duty depending on everyone’s schedules.
For this biking crew, their morning routine goes beyond convenience or exercise. The morning ride wakes everyone up and allows for a dose of fresh air before school. The kids get a chance to ‘get their wiggles out’, which helps them focus once they’re in class. The bike bus isn’t just about getting to school for them it’s about connecting and having fun. The adults and kids alike enjoy catching up and sharing time together. “The bike ride naturally sets a positive tone for the day” said Sarah, a mother and bike bus leader. She also noted at pick-up time, the kids are over the moon to share the stories of their school day while traveling home together.
The best part of this bike bus is that they ride all year round, regardless of the weather! If the conditions are too wintery for biking, the group opts for a walk instead. The kids are always happy to be outside, part of the group, and commuting together.
