Recently we partnered with Bridge Meadows in Redmond to teach bike safety and maintenance to some of their community members. Bridge Meadows builds intergenerational communities where children find stability, parents find kinship, and elders find purpose. The Redmond community opened in 2020 and is the youngest of three operational sites as the organization continues to expand into Tacoma, WA.

Earlier this summer, the Bridge Meadows team inquired about a bike safety course after one of their youth members mentioned wanting to know more about the rules when it comes to biking to their favorite places and staying safe.

During our 2.5 hour workshop, youth learned about rules of the road, helmet safety, how to fix a flat, and practiced bike handling skills such as signalling, starting, stopping, and shoulder checks. After practicing, participants put their new skills to the test on a group ride to get ice cream. For some, it was the longest they had ever ridden their bike from home.

Youth received helmets, bike lights and repair kits after participating in this class to promote safety and autonomy for the future. The participants left feeling more confident in their biking skills, giving them the ability to ride where they want and need going forward.
